ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter will concentrate on Pentecostalism as the engine of religious change in Latin America, and on Brazil as both world capital of Pentecostalism and a ‘BRIC’ country. I begin with relevant portions of the debate on religion and development, before discussing religious changes in Latin America and Pentecostalism as their key component. I then examine the state of play in works on Pentecostalism and development in the region. The conclusion cautiously attempts to discern what can be said with any confidence regarding the relationship between Pentecostalism and development.
