ABSTRACT

This book chapter focuses on the connection between social entrepreneurship and girls’ and women’s participation in sport and physical activity. Social entrepreneurs are mission-driven individuals who use their resources and business skills to create social, cultural, or environmental change. With regard to gender, physical, social, and psychological benefits have been shown for girls and women who participate in female-driven sport and physical activity programming. Thus, there has been a rise in these types of organizations and programs that focus on using sport and physical activity to combat social issues such as obesity and health, sport dropout, and gender norms over the past few decades. These endeavors are not without challenges to funding (gaining and keeping investors and grants) and issues of exclusion, power, and accessibility, but they do provide a platform for creating steps towards positive change.
