ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine how, and to what effect, the concurrent transformations of political economy and evolving gender politics intersect within the industrial and administrative practice of Chinese sport. In so doing, we provide a brief sketch of the historical bases that frame the gendered structures, ideals, and practices of women’s sport in contemporary China, followed by an outline of the role that girls and women have played in traditional and emerging Chinese sport cultures. Furthermore, to investigate women’s role in and governance practices of (women’s) sport in contemporary China, we examine how the Chinese sport administrative body approaches the role of women as well as how Chinese women athletes and managers respond to ever-changing organizational structure and policy development. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how these gendered and gendering practices might affect future (women) sport managers and business actors more generally in China.
