ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors adopt a social psychological perspective to examine the role of bias in explaining the under-representation of women in leadership positions. In doing so, the authors offer conceptual definitions of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination—the three dimensions of bias—and provide illustrative research examples. In the following section, the authors review the impact of bias, including self-limiting behaviors and a limited pool of women who can serve as leaders in sport. Conclusions and areas for future inquiry are addressed.
