ABSTRACT

There have been some notable successes in these years: the iCount and Wave demonstrations were both the largest climate demonstrations in Britain at the time, showing that it was possible to engage a wide range ofpeople with the necessary to address climate change. When the jury in the case against the Greenpeace activists who shut down the Kingsnorth power station for a day in October 2007 found that their actions had been justified because they were trying to prevent worse harm, this was an indication ofhow far the movement had succeeded in winning the argument with ordinary people that climate change mattered. Campaigns against particular projects have also been successful: in 2009, the energy company E.on announced that they would not be building a new power station at Kingsnorth, while the third runway at Heathrow, the subject of a weil-organized and committed local campaign, was shelved in 2010 (although at time of writing it appears to be back on the agenda).
