ABSTRACT

Today, autism spectrum disorders is the second most common developmental disability (Newschaffer et al., 2007). The most recent prevalence rates suggest that 1 in 110 children will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorders (Centers for Disease Control, 2009). Although there is a 4:1 ratio of males to females, autism spectrum disorders occurs across all socioeconomic levels, races and ethnicities, and geographical locations. Researchers and educators are beginning to further understand the breadth of the spectrum and, in response, have developed more sophisticated ways to diagnose children and youth with autism spectrum disorders and ameliorate their developmental deficits through effective intervention practices. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an abbreviated review of the literature and issues that surround educating children and youth with autism spectrum disorders. In particular, the following areas are included: (a) diagnosis, identifi cation, and eligibility; (b) effective intervention practices; and (c) contemporary issues and trends that infl uence educational services. Literature in each area is summarized to highlight the current trends and to direct future practice and research.
