ABSTRACT

Physical anthropology in Armenia is currently at a turning point, as recent work has started to turn towards bioarchaeological approaches. Armenia possesses a historically rich background of mortuary excavation and analysis of human remains, and has the potential to contribute important collections in the future. Combined with new techniques and methods of analysis, such collections will shed new light on the prehistory and history of ancient societies in the south Caucasus. Furthermore, the current diversity of collaborative international projects in Armenia is bringing different methods of analysis and epistemological traditions within physical anthropology into conversation. However, in order for these productive developments to be realized, several challenges in both the field and the laboratory must first be overcome.
