ABSTRACT

The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) is divided for the purposes of administration into two entities (the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Republika Srpska) and one district, Brcˇko. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of ten cantons, each with its own cantonal government. This division has led to legislative complexity in many areas, including the legislation governing archaeological sites, and thereby archaeological human remains. As in many other countries, research on earlier (archaeological) human population

samples has taken place within broader archaeological or palaeontological studies. C´iro Truhelka, Radimsky Vaclav, Alojz Benac and Đuro Basler are some of the archaeologists who described findings of human remains during their exploration of archaeological sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, V. Radimsky wrote instructions for archaeological excavation in caves, and protection and conservation procedures for any material including human remains in his book Prehistoricka nalazišta (Prehistoric Finds), published in 1891 in Sarajevo (Radimsky 1891).
