ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine the role of knowledge in children’s literacy development. We fi rst address the importance of oral language skills for reading and reading comprehension. Next, we consider possible sources of variability in children’s comprehension skills, particularly focusing on vocabulary and content knowledge. We then discuss sources of children’s knowledge and consider how knowledge development may be successfully fostered by families and schools.
