In Japanese, the way a compliment is phrased can vary greatly depending on the relationship between the speaker and the addressee as well as what the compliment is about. Unlike English, ii ‘good’ does not always work as a compliment. You may use either the formal or informal styles of speech with your equal or subordinate, depending on the situation and your relationship with them.
