The history of critical criminology in the United States

In 1915 the literary historian Van Wyck Brooks (1915, p. 339) observed that history is the “search for a usable past.” Brook’s view that writing history is a selective assembling of the past so as to render it useful in building some desired future recognizes that history is always the product of authors who necessarily write from some standpoint.
