ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on a wider study of the intersections between the changing social and cultural base of place and identities as they are increasingly caught up in, and also attempt to stand apart from, globalizing fl ows.1 The focus is on mobility and stasis in places beyond the city in Western fi rst world countries and their implications for relationships and inequalities.
