ABSTRACT

A school can make a difference in a young person’s life. More precisely, the people in a school can make a difference. For kids who don’t fi t neatly into rigid social norms, schools can be alienating and hostile places. Every child has a right to a safe and supportive learning environment, yet the school experiences of children and youth who are negatively impacted by gender and sexuality-based issues can be fraught with trouble, even danger. Because such children and young people are diverse, I begin this chapter with a section devoted to brief descriptions of who I mean when I say “queer1 youth.”
