ABSTRACT
In the 1950s US inventors at Monsanto designed artificial turf in hopes of improving fitness in urban dwellers. It had been noticed that children who lived in cities were less physically fit than their rural counterparts and it was thought that a low maintainance surface on which to play would promote more recreational activity. In 1965, Monsanto filed a patent for Astroturf, originally called Chemgrass.
