ABSTRACT

Trevor Nunn has been the Artistic Director of the two leading classical theatre companies in the UK – the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and the National Theatre (NT). As a freelance director, he has enjoyed considerable success in the commercial theatre, especially as the director of a series of hit musicals, and he has explored the translation of Shakespeare into the medium of film. However, the following essay focuses only on his approach to the creative practice of directing Shakespeare in the theatre.
