Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the impact of parking on public transport accessibility, showing how parking and public transport interact, especially with respect to the built environment, parking provision and parking demand. The chapter examines how, within broader travel demand management (TDM) strategies, parking facility provision can complement public transport services when parking development and public transport strategies are integrated, particularly strategies to facilitate first-mile parking needs and improve the attractiveness of public transport services. The chapter illustrates these connections in a case study showing how parking need and supply interact, as well as the impact of built environment features, parking provision and parking need in the business environments of restaurant precincts in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The chapter concludes with avenues for future research.
