ABSTRACT

In addressing poetics in the age of synthetic intelligence and sentient architecture, what becomes necessary is the shifting of perception. Aesthetics based on sight, sound, and materiality would move away from a value system constructed for humans to one that is more nuanced. Increasing pressures from changing climates and advancing technologies will bring about new social orders among the human, animal, plant, bacteria, and synthetic.

Sentient architecture will have sense organs and active tactility beyond the scope of humans. New occupants of such buildings and environments will require different aesthetic and social systems: augmented tectonics and synthetic intelligence are put forward.

While the definition of tectonics has evolved with the introduction of new material technology, at every stage it connected issues related to construction, engineering, and material character with questions of architectural and artistic expression, imagination, and symbolism. The arrival and development of digital technologies within the field have initiated and enabled a reconceptualization of the tectonic to include transhuman concerns.
