Abstract

This chapter relates contemporary scientific understanding of environmental problems to relevant Bahá’í principles and writings concerning the nature of creation, basic principles of systems organisation and evolution, ecology, environmental responsibility, sustainability, and conservation of nature. Beyond fundamental systems change, the Bahá’í teachings provide guidance concerning environmental problems such as climate change, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, destruction and pollution of resources, and other ways that modern society is impacting the environment and endangering our future. The Bahá’í teachings analyse driving forces for environmental destruction that prioritise economic growth over the environment, and foster materialism and a consumer culture along with persistent poverty. Our society and economy have globalised without corresponding global governance. Bahá’ís have long been involved in environmental issues, with the Bahá’í International Community active at the United Nations and in interfaith events, and a Bahá’í-inspired professional organisation, the International Environment Forum. They propose positive directions for the future inspired by spiritual principles, leading to practical actions such as moderation in lifestyles; sustainable agriculture, production and consumption; and global cooperation. It is the force of spiritual transformation that can put humanity on course to restore the planet’s natural resources and carrying capacity, and to lay the foundations for an ever-advancing, sustainable civilisation.
