ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that despite efforts over the last many years poverty is still an issue, and that in many countries around the globe we are witnessing poverty on a large scale. This both when looking into absolute and relative poverty. At the same time there are many positive stories about reduction in the levels of poverty, especially in Asia, but also in other places. Even if it is still an issue, both for those on the labour market, those who have retired and for children, there is a growing knowledge about policies that might help in reducing or alleviating poverty. This ranges from ensuring high-quality education to income transfers as well as labour market policies ensuring options for jobs for many persons. So, it does not seem impossible to eradicate poverty if there is political will to do so.
