ABSTRACT

Northern Australia covers the area of Western Australia State and Queensland State north of the Tropic of Capricorn and that of the whole Northern Territory. Despite a vast land area (more than 3 million km2), Northern Australia has a population of only 1.3 million (i.e. about 5% of the total population in Australia) and the majority of its population is distributed in cities near the Australian coastline (e.g. Townsville, Cairns, Mackay and Kelvin). In addition, in Northern Australia, there are about 190,000 aborigines, who account for 30% of the total Aborigine population in Australia.
