ABSTRACT

Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET or Lamu Corridor) is a part of Kenya’s “Vision Strategy 2023”. This corridor aims to realise long-term national development, develop Kenya into a middle-income emerging industrialised country by 2030 and provide security guarantee and high-quality life for the Kenyan people. This strategy has 3 objectives: political, economic and social; as an economic objective, it aims to realise an annual economic growth rate of more than 10% until 2030. 1 In March 2012, this corridor was initiated jointly by Kenya, Sudan and Ethiopia, so as to promote a development of regional economy and alleviate the traffic pressure of Mombasa–Uganda Transportation Corridor. As Kenya’s largest infrastructure construction plan in “Vision Strategy 2023”, this corridor aims to open up the Kenya second traffic transportation corridor, establish a multi-modal combined transportation channel, realise a seamless connection between Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia, and promote an economic development in the northern, eastern, north-eastern and coastal areas of Kenya.
