ABSTRACT

Transition to civilian life brings forth challenges to adapt to the changing scenario. Veterans may perceive it as a loss (bereavement) of career. Parting with the rank and status they held, results in loss of identity and purpose. Any transition requires time. It is preposterous to expect that an individual can forget the environment where he has served for so many years. They continue to relive their military life experiences by dint of memories and end up finding themselves in an indecorous place. It is important to remember that adjustment to civilian life takes longer than any physical adaptation for a military task. Adjustment issues vary according to an individual's personality, nature of service life led and age at the time of transition This chapter is an attempt to understand various adjustment issues faced by veterans while undergoing transition from military to civilian life and how this transition can be made a little smoother.
