ABSTRACT
Maconchy’s second child, Nicola, was born on 28 April 1947, although no letters between the two friends have survived from this time. Maconchy’s family had abandoned the idea of a move to London and were still at Wickham Lodge in Essex. During this eight-month period, Maconchy heard several of her works performed, including her Concertino for clarinet and string orchestra (1945), finished her Symphony (1945–8), and started work on a Fifth String Quartet (1948–9).
