Maconchy’s growing stature in the late 1940s can be seen in her election to the committee for the London Contemporary Music Centre. This brief three-month period saw the first performance of Maconchy’s Fifth String Quartet (1948–9) while music by Williams for film and radio continued to be broadcast.
