ABSTRACT
The correspondence between Maconchy and Williams dates back to 1927, when they were both studying composition at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. Maconchy had been a student there since 1923, and Williams arrived in 1926, having previously completed a BMus at the University of Cardiff. Their RCM composition teacher was Ralph Vaughan Williams – known to his students as ‘Uncle Ralph’.
