ABSTRACT
In this nine-month period, few letters survive from Williams. Maconchy’s letters highlight the amount of time and energy she was spending as ‘chairman’ of the Composers’ Guild of Great Britain. Both women’s letters from this time also throw an interesting light on their responses to serialism and other avant-garde ways of creating music, including electronic music and ‘chance-music’.
