ABSTRACT

During this seven-month period, Maconchy continued working on her Proms commission, Variazioni concertante for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, and strings (1964–5). She heard premières of two recent works: Samson and the Gates of Gaza for chorus and orchestra (1963–4), given at Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, and her settings for soprano and chamber orchestra of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s ‘The Starlight Night’ and ‘Peace’ (1964).
