ABSTRACT

During this nine-month period, Maconchy was preoccupied with her work for the 1965 Proms, Variazioni concertante for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, and strings (1964–5), and the birth of her second grandchild, Anna’s daughter Sarah. She also worked on Nocturnal for SATB chorus (1965), and her harpsichord pieces, Sonatina (1965) and Notebook (1965). Williams heard performances of various works, including Penillion (1955) and the Trumpet Concerto (1963). She was working on Carillons for oboe and orchestra (1965, rev. 1973), and heard that her opera, The Parlour (1960–61), was scheduled for performance by Welsh National Opera.
