ABSTRACT
On 3 September 1939, Neville Chamberlain declared that Britain was at war with Germany. Maconchy flew to Dublin to give birth to her first child, Anna, born on 24 October. Both women were to move around frequently due to the war, trying to avoid the threat of German bombing and facing various war-time shortages and obligations which encroached on time they would otherwise have spent composing.
