ABSTRACT

Maconchy and Williams wrote frequently to each other in this five-month period, during which there was a great deal going on for both of them. Williams’s Composer’s Portrait for her 60th birthday was finally broadcast on BBC radio and there were performances of her contribution to the composite orchestral Severn Bridge Variations (1966), her Carillons for oboe and orchestra (1965), and, despite difficulties in rehearsal, Carmina Avium for chorus, viola d’amore, and harp (1966–7).
