ABSTRACT

During 1969, Maconchy was working on her Ninth String Quartet (1968–9) for the Radcliffe Music Award competition and her Dylan Thomas setting And Death Shall Have No Dominion for SATB chorus and brass (1968–9). She also began work on The Jesse Tree, a masque for Dorchester Abbey to a libretto by Anne Ridler. Williams was busy with her Processional, later titled Castell Caernarfon (1968–9), for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales, and a song cycle Billows of the Sea (1969) for contralto and piano for the Swansea Festival.
