Abstract

This chapter elaborates on the use of crypto-assets for financial crime. It scrutinizes the challenges crypto-assets bring from the perspective of combating money laundering and terrorist financing and dives deeper into the regulatory responses developed within the European Union (EU) to tackle those challenges. It shows that the first EU regulatory framework relating to money laundering and terrorist financing via crypto-assets is already insufficient to deal with the current reality in the crypto-space and requires several amendments to align it with international standards.
