Abstract

Happiness continues to elude individuals in organizations of all types, including in families, and this can have far-reaching negative effects in Africa and elsewhere in the world. Though empirical evidence suggests that religious belief, albeit related to spirituality but conceptually different from it, is an important descriptor/tenet/facet/determinant of culture in most African countries, empirical literature on the relationship between spirituality and happiness is scarce. This chapter explores the theoretical and empirical concepts of spirituality and happiness literature. Religious belief is an important descriptor/tenet of culture in most African countries, yet literature on the link between spirituality and happiness is scarce. Could it be that a solution may be found in the realm of spirituality? On the basis of literature review, we propose some directions for research.
