ABSTRACT

Since its inception in the 1890s, the motor vehicle has had a profound impact on the development of nearly every aspect of modern culture as well as the contemporary landscape. For this reason, it is important to preserve automotive heritage and to understand it better. This volume is intended to create an opportunity for the preservation of the motor vehicle, its associated material, and sociocultural use to be explored and discussed. If heritage is “a process of engagement,” “an act of communication,” and “an act of making meaning,” what should we say and what should we know about our driven heritage? 1 What stories from the past, issues of the present, and implications for the future are shaped by our ongoing love affair with the motor vehicle?
