ABSTRACT

318 319The 10th general election after the adoption of the 1973 Constitution was held on 25 July 2018 and saw Imran Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician, become Pakistan’s 22nd Prime Minister. His party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), formed a coalition with a number of smaller parties to gain a majority in the National Assembly. The long-established Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML–N) were forced onto the Opposition benches and the Khan group was able to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly from its ranks. What would this political earthquake produce for Pakistan?
