In all this turmoil, the Pakistan Army remained a key actor. Perforce, it had to transform itself, from being a largely static and conventional fighting body designed to protect the nation’s borders against India and any other external foe, to an army that would fight an asymmetrical war inside its own border … that war continues today as does the hostility between India and Pakistan. 1
