ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to explore and examine the emerging travel narratives in Bollywood cinema by analysing three popular Bollywood blockbusters between 2010 and 2015: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (from 2011), Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (from 2013) and Dil Dhadakne Do (from 2015). These films narrativized means of vacationing such as adventure road trips, backpacking and cruising, respectively. This study analyses the travel representations and the narrative structures of the films and argues that their depictions may significantly influence the manner in which Indian film-tourists perform travel. Using an interdisciplinary framework, and a narrative analysis of the aforementioned films, this chapter attempts to offer a deeper understanding of contemporary societal representations of travel and tourism in the Indian context.
