ABSTRACT

This chapter sheds light on how tourists’ Instagram narratives are impacting on tourism, and on how tourism is itself submitting to the logic of social media. It analyses how the combination of affordances, such as digital photography, high speed internet and social media, impacts on the ways in which people experience and interact with the locations they visit. It also describes how touristic sites are adapting to this new reality, and how Instagram users are contributing to the production of locations. It then addresses criticisms of the practice and discusses how it relates to power relations within society.
