ABSTRACT

Because of the massive destruction of Scottish documents and records from guilds, burghs, churches and courts – worse destruction even than in England – the story of Scottish theatre before 1600 is difficult to trace with certainty. There were possibly mystery plays or pageants performed in Aberdeen and Dundee, as well as Perth and Edinburgh, in the fifteenth century. But no texts or descriptions have come down to us, though sites of outdoor performance exist at Windmill Hill, Aberdeen and Greenside in Edinburgh.
