ABSTRACT
By 1580, the political stability of England seemed increasingly imperilled by resurgent Catholic enemies. At home, although the queen’s cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned, her existence gave a focus to disaffected Catholic plotters who were determined to replace Elizabeth with Mary. Abroad, the Catholic threat was fiercely embodied in the Spanish, who were gearing up to invade England with their fearsome Armada.
