ABSTRACT
The theatres which were built during the Restoration period created a configuration and physical structure which was to last with comparatively few changes for nearly two centuries. Choosing not to try to recreate the old open popular theatres, Davenant and Killigrew both sought something smaller, more intimate, more select, based on the pre-Civil War Stuart court theatre. It was to be part of the new Restoration narrative.
