Immorality and profaneness

One reason for the theatre’s loss of some of its best writers at the end of the 1690s was the bombshell lobbed in 1698 by Rev Jeremy Collier: a long pamphlet entitled A Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage.
