ABSTRACT

This lesson aims to provide instructors with the materials needed to guide students through an exploration of rhythm and meter (tāl) in North Indian classical music. Implementing Bartolome’s Virtual Field Experience to ground the musical culture in geographical and historical contexts, the plan provided here is supplemented by a PowerPoint slideshow template and worksheets online. By the end of the two activities, students will be able to identify the constituent elements of tāl theory, name the sections of classical Hindustani musical form, and apply their knowledge through analysis.
