ABSTRACT

Applied chords provide an entrance point into the study of chromatic harmony and modulation. It is essential that students fully understand the tonicizing function of these chords and that they are able to sing and hear these harmonies in a musical context. This lesson plan provides an introduction to applied chords using examples that students can analyze and perform in class to help them gain the necessary fluency with these important chromatic chords.
