ABSTRACT

This two-part lesson plan introduces modulation via the augmented-sixth chord and its enharmonic equivalent, the major-minor seventh sonority. Part 1 introduces the concept and culminates in a worksheet/assignment with extensive respelling drills and short repertoire analyses. Part 2 explores the Mm7/+6 as a text-painting device in works by Rodgers and Hart, Beethoven, Adolphe Adam, and Stephen Sondheim. The lesson is ideal for two 50-minute classes, but may be condensed to one 75-minute class with some of the in-class activities assigned as homework.
