ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies two important aspects of teaching music fundamentals: connecting all concepts with sound, and integrating as much repertoire as possible. Six worksheets, three on intervals, two on triads, and one that includes “theory twisters,” are included online as part of this chapter. The author concludes by outlining some best practices for ensuring that students gain fluency with these skills: the importance of providing specific feedback, grading with the appropriate level of rigor, assigning frequent graded work, and maintaining a reasonably quick turnaround time for grading, among others.
