ABSTRACT
This lesson plan explores methods for developing the seldom-discussed skill of determining the tonic of a passage of music. I define and comment on five approaches extrapolated from existing aural skills textbooks, demonstrate exercises designed for the first weeks of an early aural skills course, give suggestions for methods of assessment, and finally describe ways of working individually with students who have severe difficulty with this skill.
