ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ample materials from a wide range of styles, from Björk to Brahms and Radiohead to Mozart, to introduce and illustrate common uses of chromatic mediants, with emphasis on popular music examples. Skills developed in this lesson include spelling chromatic mediant chords, identifying key relationships, and musical analysis with chromatic mediant chords and modulation to chromatic mediant key areas via common tone. This chapter includes an ear-training exercise and an emphasis on other means of active learning.
