ABSTRACT

Inspired by the popular podcast Song Exploder, this lesson plan teaches first-year music students to create music-analytical podcasts. Armed with a knowledge of popular music (or any other style), students will learn how to record, import, and edit audio, and create a short podcast that makes a focused analytical argument. Audio-based analysis teaches students technical skills, encourages public engagement, and serves as a scaffolding assignment for making more extended analytical arguments in live presentations or prose.
