ABSTRACT

Recent emphasis on standardized “high stakes” testing has resulted in learners who expect an effective classroom model to provide “The” right answer. The challenge is to rethink the Aural Skills curriculum to transcend beyond mere identification exercises and finite testable moments. Our charge is to reignite the joy of exploration and value of skill development as an ongoing process, while emphasizing deeper learning and engagement. This chapter outlines seven areas of curricular adaptation that emphasize audiation, graphic tracking, imagery, and improvisation in an interactive, community-based workshop environment. Each topic area includes a description of creative classroom methods and activities.
